Fayette, Mo. - The No. 2 nationally ranked Central Methodist women's basketball program kept its perfect record intact with a convincing 85-51 win over Mount Mercy Saturday afternoon inside Puckett Field House.
The Eagles now stand at 25-0 and 19-0 in the Heart. Mount Mercy falls to 11-15 and 7-13 in conference play. CMU has also claimed at least a share of the Heart Regular Season Championship.
Holding a four point lead at the end of the first quarter, Central dominated the second, outscoring the Mustangs 25-7. The third quarter was more evenly balanced, with CMU just outscoring Mount Mercy 19-18.
The Eagles would close the game out with 22 fourth quarter points, compared to just 11 for the Mustangs.
Sophomore forward Leah Johnson had a career-day, pouring in a career-high 29 points on 13-of-17 shooting from the floor. She also grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds to earn another double double.
Zutorya Cook chipped in 17 points along with four rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block. Leianya Massenat added 15 points, five assists, five steals, and four rebounds.
Daryna Bachkarova rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points in addition to six rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
Central put together a solid shooting performance, shooting 46.8 percent from the floor, compared to just 23 percent for Mount Mercy. The Eagles also forced 19 Mustang turnovers on 14 steals.
CMU controlled the glass, outrebounding MMU 51-39, which included 19 offesive rebounds.
The Eagles will next host Baker University Monday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. inside Puckett Field House. With a victory, Central will claim their fifth Heart of America Regular Season Championship in program history outright.
