Central Cruises Past Statesmen in Wednesday Night Road Tilt

Oskaloosa, Iowa - The Central Methodist Women's Basketball team ended its two-game losing skid with a 79-53 victory over William Penn Wednesday night in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

CMU improves to 8-7 and 5-6 in the Heart of America, while the Statesmen fall to 3-12 and 2-9 in conference play.

After a slow first quarter that saw Central trailing 19-15, the Eagles' defense held William Penn to just five points in the second. CMU powered ahead and took a 32-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Eagles outscored WPU 21-16 in the third quarter and then cranked up the offensive pressure with 26 points in the fourth to secure a double-digit win.

Junior guard Zutorya Cook led the Eagle offense with 20 points while also grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds to finish with a double-double. In addition, Cook tallied six assists and six steals in the win. The 20 points marks Cook's fourth-straight 20 point performance.

Sharay Trotter scored 18 points on seven-of-12 shooting from the floor including a pair of threes. Genet Mebratu scored a career-best 13 points, while Charli Wroe rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points.

She also dished out four assists in 25 minutes off the bench.

As a team, the Eagles shot 46.3 percent from the floor and 41.2 percent from three. Central held the Statesmen to under 33 percent shooting from the floor and forced 28 turnovers on 17 steals.

CMU outrebounded the Statesmen, 42-37, and dished out an assist on 16 possessions.

Central returns home for a three-game homestand beginning with Mount Mercy Saturday, Jan. 13 at 2:00 p.m. inside Puckett Field House.
