Central Rolls Over No. 16 Missouri Valley, 3-0

Central Rolls Over No. 16 Missouri Valley, 3-0

Fayette, Mo. - The Central Methodist Men's Soccer team knocked off No. 16 nationally ranked Missouri Valley College in a 3-0 shutout Wednesday night at Davis Field.

The Eagles improve to 6-5-2 and 3-3-1 in conference action, while MVC is handed their first loss of Heart play and is now 7-4 and 6-1 in the Heart of America.

It was a scoreless first have for both sides, as there were seven combines shots taken for both MVC and CMU in the opening period.

Senior midfielder Alvaro Perojo started the scoring for the Eagles following a throw in from Isaac Johnson less than 90 seconds into the second half. Perojo scored after his first initial shot was blocked by the MVC keeper to put Central up 1-0.

In the 56th minute, Johnson battled through defensive pressure from the Vikings on the near sideline, keeping the ball in play for Central. Johnson then sent a low drive cross just inside the box to Koen Schimmel

Schimmel slipped the ball past the keeper which found the bottom left corner of the net for the score, extending CMU's lead to 2-0.

Sophomore forward Cian Halpin put the finishing touches on the match less than three minutes later. A defensive miscue by the Vikings forced the MVC keeper to come off his line and try to defend Halpin one-on-one.

Halpin juked the keeper and slipped the ball into the back of the net for the third and final goal of the match.

Despite the Vikings tallying one more shot than Central, CMU was more efficient with their shot selection, finishing the evening with four shots on goal compared to just two for MVC.

Sophomore Liam Arthur recorded two shots, while Perojo, Schimmel, Mats Van Der Eerden, Lucas Perrin, and Halpin all tallied one.

Niccolo Cabras played all 90 minutes in goal for the Eagles, picking up one save and making several key saves outside of the box to preserve the clean sheet.

Central concludes its three-game home stand against Benedictine College Saturday, Oct. 14 at 8:00 p.m. at Davis Field.
