Des Moines, Iowa – The Central Methodist University football team hit the road for the first time in 2016 on Saturday afternoon, traveling north to face 6th ranked Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. The Eagles fell to the Vikings by a final of 36-17.
"We have to get better at playing winning football," said CMU head football coach David S. Calloway following today's game.
With the loss, Central Methodist falls to 0-2, while 6th ranked Grand View University improves to 1-1 on the season.
Central Methodist jumped on the scoreboard first on Saturday, when kick Raul Palacios (SO/Milan, Mo.) capped off a four play drive with a 28 yard field goal just four minutes into the ballgame, giving CMU an early 3-0 lead.
Grand View took control from there, scoring on their next four offensive possessions. The Vikings scored a touchdown late in the first quarter, then made two field goals and connected on a 30 yard touchdown pass to take a 20-3 lead into halftime.
Early in the second half, Caleb Bedford (JR/Houston, Tex.) hooked up with wide receiver Adam Weiland (SR/Sullivan, Mo.) for a 60 yard touchdown pass, to put CMU back into the game. Following the Palacios PAT, the Eagles trailed by just 10 points, at 20-10.
The Vikings scored on their next three possessions; two TD's and a field goal to take a commanding 36-10 lead.
Central would counter with a Caleb Bedford rushing touchdown, his third of the season to close out the scoring at 36-17.
As a team, CMU had only 117 yards passing and 144 yards on the ground.
The Eagles remain on the road, as they travel to Canton, Missouri for a meeting at Culver-Stockton College on Saturday, September 10th. CMU returns home to Davis Field Saturday, September 17th for their annual Hall of Fame Game. Kick-off is slated for 2pm from Davis Field against #23 William Penn University.
