Eagles shutout Graceland, 42-0, in season opener

Lamoni, Iowa - Behind 441 yards of total offense and two defensive touchdowns, the Central Methodist University football team shutout fellow Heart member Graceland University, 42-0, Saturday afternoon in Lamoni, Iowa. 

With the victory, the Eagles improve to 1-0 overall while the Yellowjackets fall to 0-1. It marks the third-straight season the Eagles have defeated GU. 

CMU out firing on all cylinders, exploding for 28 first-quarter points. Jalen Brown got the scoring started on a quarterback keeper from 15-yards just 2:18 into the opening frame. Less than a minute later, Mar'Quess Daniels intercepted Bret Whitehall's pass and ran it all the way for a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown. Jalen Brown would then link up with 2019 NAIA All-American wide receiver Katavious Taylor for two more scores to conclude the first quarter.

After a scoreless 13:09 of the second quarter, Shawn Simmons pushed the Eagles lead to 35-0 on a touchdown rush from four yards out. CMU capped the shutout on the defensive end, as Khari Henley picked up a forced fumble and took it back 92-yards for the final score of the game. 

Jalen Brown had an efficient day under center for the Eagles, as he completed 22-of-31 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns. Simmons had a nice day on the ground as well, rushing for 127 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries. Taylor opened up his junior campaign with six reception for 103 yards and two scores, while fellow teammate Kooper Wilson grabbed seven receptions for 62 yards. 

The pair of Daniels and Will Miles both picked up a sack, while Daniels also picked up seven tackles including two for losses. Along with Daniels, Erik Mays, Anthony Johnson, and Brandon Molinari each recorded an interception. Overall the CMU defense held the Yellowjackets to 116 total yards of offense and held the opposing quarterback to nine-of-23 for 72 yards and four interceptions. 

Central Methodist will look to push its record to 2-0 next weekend when they host William Penn for homecoming on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Davis Field
