Kansas City, Mo. - After a stellar outing against MidAmerica Nazarene University Saturday afternoon, junior punter Samuel Petrin has been named the NAIA National Special Teams Player of the Week, as announced by the national office Monday.
The Bunnell, Fla. native is the first Central Methodist football player to receive the honor since former teammate Jordan Williams was recognized in Week 10 of the 2019 season. Prior to Williams, the only other Eagle to receive NAIA National Player of the Week honors in the last decade was Bryant Jackson in Week 3 of the 2009 season.
Petrin's national honors come after converting both of his field goals, including a long of 41 in Central's 45-2 senior day win over MidAmerica Nazarene Saturday. He also nailed all of his extra points and recorded nine kickoffs for 482 yards, and six punts for 218 yards including one inside the MNU 10-yard line.
Petrin also took home player of the week honors on Oct. 19 and again on Nov. 9. He finishes his junior campaign ranked No. 9 in the nation in field goal percentage (.900).
CMU's win over MNU gives the Eagles a final record of 5-4 and a 3-2 mark in the Heart South Division. It is the first time that Central has posted an above .500 record since the 2014 campaign when they finished 6-5.
