Junior Shawn Beard (Moberly, Mo.) scored a pair of first-half goals to lead the Central Methodist University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over William Woods University in a non-conference game Wednesday evening.
Beard scored in the 26th minute off a ball from junior Christine Ehrmann (St. Charles, Mo.) to give Central Methodist a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Beard scored her second goal of the game when her corner kick curved into the opposite side of the net, making it 2-0 in favor of CMU. William Woods cut the lead to 2-1 with 24 minutes remaining in the contest, but the Lady Eagles played tough to hold on for the win.
Central Methodist out-shot William Woods 24-7 in the contest, and the Lady Eagles had nine shots on goal compared with just three for the Owls. Sophomore Brittany Andert (St. Peters, Mo.) played 90 minutes in goal for CMU, recording two saves.
CMU improved to 7-0 with the win, the best start in the program's 24-year history. William Woods dropped to 2-3-1 with the loss. The Lady Eagles will put their unbeaten record on the line Saturday when they travel to Ottawa, Kan., to take on Ottawa University in a 5 p.m. contest.
