Fayette, Mo. – The Central Methodist University women's soccer team opened up the 2016 regular season Tuesday evening at Davis Field against the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets. CMU routed Harris-Stowe by a final of 7-0.
With the victory, the Eagles begin the season 1-0, while Harris-Stowe State falls to 0-1.
Both teams started slow on Tuesday evening, as it was the first match of the season for both squads. Central broke through in the 25th minute, when Nicki Noreen (SR/Bartlett, Ill.) scored the matches' first goal on a breakaway, to put CMU up 1-0. Kylie Thwing (FR/Troy, Mo.) added her first goal as an Eagle in the 33rd minute, and Zendy Montalvo (SR/Des Moines, Iowa) added one more goal in the 44th minute, to give CMU a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
The Eagles would not let their foot off the gas pedal in the second half, scoring four goals to claim a 7-0 shutout season opening victory. Judith Sainz (FR/Pamplona, Spain) added her first and second goals in a CMU uniform in the 59th and 67th minute, while Lady Tiriat (SR/Bogota, Columbia) and Sarah Freiermuth (FR/Blue Springs, Mo.) each added a goal late to cap off the victory.
Ashlynn Freeman (FR/Moberly, Mo.) picked up the victory in net for CMU, recording two saves in the shutout win.
Central will hit the road this weekend, to face Hannibal-LaGrange on Saturday at 2:30pm. The Eagles return home next Wednesday August 31st, to host Tabor College at 5pm at Davis Field.
