Des Moines, Iowa – Rachel Topliss (SO/Walsall, England)' goal in the 31st minute, proved to be the game-winner Saturday night, as the Central Methodist University women's soccer team defeated Grand View University 1-0 in Des Moines, Iowa.
With the victory Saturday, Central Methodist improves to 11-2-2 overall and 5-2-2 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play. With the loss, Grand View falls to 8-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in The Heart.
"I am very proud of the girls," said CMU head women's soccer coach Dan Schmidlin. "The girls worked hard on what we trained the last couple of days, and it showed up in the game. It was a great team effort tonight."
Saturday's game featured great defense by both teams, and even better goalkeeping. The difference maker came in the 31st minute. Central's Rachel Topliss fired a shot from 18 yards out and put it in the back of the net, giving Central the 1-0 lead.
Eagles' goalkeeper Ashlynn Freeman (FR/Moberly, Mo.) recorded her ninth shutout of the season Saturday. The freshman phenom made nine saves in 90 minutes of action.
Central returns home this Wednesday to host Evangel University. The women's match will begin at 7:30pm, immediately following the men's match.
