FAYETTE, Mo. ---- Sophomore goalkeeper Ashlynn Freeman from the Central Methodist women's soccer team was named to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team in the College Division for the first time in her career Thursday afternoon.
Freeman currently sports a 3.52 GPA, and is majoring in Special Education. On the field, she has led the Eagles to a 16-2-2 finish, and the team is currently ranked No. 11 in the NAIA.
For the first time in program history, the women's soccer program won the Heart of America Athletic Conference regular season title, and secured a bid for the 2017 NAIA Women's Soccer National Tournament.
She also is ranked number one in the country in the statistical category of goals against per game with a .250 average. Freeman has led a defensive unit that has given up just five goals all season, and ranks second in the nation for total shutouts with 15. On the year, she has 47 saves with 11 clean sheets, which included a six-game streak where she held opponents scoreless.
Head coach Dan Schmidlin mentioned, "I am super proud of Ashlynn. She was named a Second Team All-Conference member, and with this recognition she is getting the job done academically and athletically. It is hard to do soccer and school, but she has done a great job with both."
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be announced in December.
The Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the seventh year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
