FAYETTE, Mo. - Goals less than three minutes apart by Andrea Villar and Judith Sainz (JR/Pamplona, Spain) set the stage in a 2-1 win for the (RV) Central Methodist University women's soccer team over Evangel University on a chilly Wednesday evening.
The Eagles move to 13-4 overall and 8-2 in the Heart as Ashlynn Freeman (JR/Moberly, Mo.) secured five saves to stop the Crusaders (6-9-1, 2-8) attack.
After a scoreless first half, the Crusaders struck first in the 55th minute on a header by Maya Davidson in the box. Villar answered for the Eagles to tie the game with a long shot on a cross from Kayla Deaver (FR/Lee's Summit, Mo.). Sainz buried the game winning goal less than two minutes later with the help of Anika Kallash (SO/Troy, Mo.), putting the team one goal ahead.
The Crusaders had a chance to tie with six minutes left but sailed a penalty kick high. The Eagles defense clamped down and did not allow the equalizer, despite seven shots on goal in a scrappy second half.
Central Methodist will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 27, for their final regular season match of the season and Senior Day matchup between Mount Mercy. Game time is set for 11 am.
